Anderhalf miljoen! Naar grove (onder)schatting het aantal zwerfhonden in Portugal. En naar nóg grovere schatting 3 tot 4 keer zoveel zwerfkatten. En hoewel het leven van een zwerfdier al miserabel te noemen is, zou ik bijna durven beweren dat deze straatdieren nog beter af zijn dan de honden die een baasje getroffen hebben. Die meestal hun hele ellendige leven lang aan een ketting doorbrengen of een hok van 2x2. Met geluk net voldoende eten krijgen en met nog meer geluk ook naar de dierenarts worden gebracht als ze iets mankeren.
Een hondenleven
Het is in veel gevallen niet eens zozeer een kwade intentie van de mensen jegens het dier. Het is een diepgewortelde gewoonte met de even zo diepgewortelde overtuiging dat een dier toch niet voelt en meer als 'ding' wordt gezien. Zelfs de Portugese wet is pas zeer recentelijk (2016) aangepast met de revolutionaire bepaling dat een dier niet als 'ding' mag worden gezien, maar als een levend wezen met gevoelens en dus geen leed mag worden aangedaan. Zeker een stap in de goede richting, maar nog een hele lange weg te gaan als het om dierenwelzijn in Portugal gaat. Niet alleen op politiek niveau, maar vooral ook de bewustwording de mentaliteit en....sterilisaties. Voor nu het enige antwoord op de nog steeds toenemende overpopulatie en daarmee een hoop onnodig dierenleed.
Omarm het goede doel
Samen met een aantal lokale asielen, zetten wij ons hier voor in. (Hoe we dat doen, lees je hier) En hoewel dat allemaal op vrijwilligersbasis gaat, geldt ook hier dat we zonder middelen weinig kunnen. En zo ontstond het idee voor MBrace. Een klein project van 'geven en nemen'. Waarvan de hele opbrengst voor het goede doel zal worden aangewend en daarvoor een "omarming" terug geven. Een souvenir uit Portugal met een betekenis. One-and-a-half million. A rough (under)estimation of the number of stray dogs in Portugal. And although a life of a stray dog is quite miserable, I would almost dare to say that a stray dog lives a better life comparing to the dogs who are 'blessed' to live with a family. Who are spending their awfull long life chained up or in a kennel of 2 by 2 meters. Who will hopefully get just enough to eat and in an exceptional lucky occasion will get medical care if needed.
A dog-life
Not necessarily because of bad intentions of people towards their dogs, but more a simple result of deeply rooted habits and the persuasion that animals don't have any feelings and are being considered more as 'a thing' than a living creature. Even the Portuguese law only just recently (2016) changed the law with the revolutionary decision that animals can no longer be considered as an object, and therefore cannot be done any harm to make them suffer.
A step forward in the right direction, but still a long long way to go as it comes to animal welfare in Portugal. Not only politically, but also as it comes to awareness, changing mentality and.....sterilizations. For now, the only answer to an endlessly growing dog population which unavoidably causes a lot of suffering.
Embrace the charity
Together with a couple of local shelters, we strive for improving animal welfare in Portugal. With a total capacity for 300 dogs, organizing and running sterilization projects and an education project to create awareness for a new generation. Although we are all working on a voluntary base, we cannot do without financial support. And that is how I started MBrace. A small project of 'giving and taking'. The full profit will be donated to charity and we are giving an embrace in return. A souvenir from Portugal, for the dogs of Portugal. MBrace the charity and embrace the craftwork.
